Default Here's an interesting story from Europe about China

This was sent to me by a friend who writes for business-to-business media.
It's an excerpt from an email she got and, because I didn't hear the story myself, it's second hand and it might be one of those that are like Internet stories -- don't take them to be true unless you know for sure.
However, my friend said it was sent to her by an editor at a trade magazine in Europe whom she trusts. She didn't tell me who the editor is nor his publication, buit I'm posting it as an item of interest and a warning:
it's about a manufacturer in Italy (and no, I don't know who Mr. Moretto is):

He bought 3-4 tonnes of steel from China, used it to make whatever his company makes, and found out later the steel was radioactive. Mr. Moretto as a result bought a Geiger counter to check all of his firm's incoming metals.
Will the rest of the world ever learn that the Chinese can't be trusted!!??

That's the end of it.
Anyone have any similar experiences or personal knowledge about them?

I have similar experiences all the time. Everytime I buy something at WalMart, Walgreens, Target, Home Depot, Harbor Freight, and on and on and on ---- Everything is made in China it seems except for Channel Lock pliers. Have had no radio active stuff but who knows what we will find tomorrow or next week.

No the Chinese cannot be trusted and I am personally sick of it. I try to buy US but good luck on that point, especially tools. If I need tools and go to Home Depot I find Chinese JUNK even Irwin tools, Vise Grip etc is Chinese now. I'd rather go to Harbor Freight and pay an appropriate price for the JUNK than get the same thing at Home Depot for twice the price. At least at Horror Fright you know what to expect.

first of all, you are a good manner that say this story maybe is not true.

as a China exporter, we admit that some Chinese is not honest.every place can find cheater, right? even though in USA, there are lots of cheat case every year. but most China supplier is honest. becuase they want to keep a long relation with you, so, they can earn more money.

For above example, maybe that supplier do not know it is radioactive too, becuase there are no strict inspect in China.

that people bought 3 tons steel, as you know, it is very very small order. it is really not necessary to cheat you,

if we really want to cheat you, we will not send anything to you after receiving down payment.

The profit of 3 tons steel maybe is very low, about USD100.

it is not value to give up a customer for USD100 only.

Default My opinion on the Chinese

I feel that you have to be crazy to buy anything from the chinese that may be sensitive to major issues. For instance, if you need something to meet certain specs, or made of a certain material, you have to deal with a more reputable and local manufacturer. In the wire mesh industry in the past, I have seen a number of suppliers buying and reselling chinese product only to get burned when the realized the metal wasn't exactly what the manufacturere said it was. if you need a certain quality, spend the extra buck, and buy something that is made by a source that you can TRUST!
